How long does it take to read this?

A reading time calculator turns a word count into an estimated reading time using an average reading speed measured in words per minute (WPM). It's the fastest way to answer questions like how long will it take me to read this article, how long is a 500-word speech, or how many minutes should I put in my “X min read” badge.

Research gives us reasonably stable numbers. Adults read silently at around 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 WPM for fiction (Brysbaert, 2019). Reading aloud is much slower — roughly 183 WPM for English, since your mouth can't keep up with your eyes. Audiobook narrators typically clock in at 150–160 WPM to stay comfortable to listen to.

This calculator uses those defaults but lets you adjust. Slower readers, younger students, or people reading in a second language will finish above the average. Skim readers and speed-readers run well over 400 WPM. Whatever your pace, the math is simple: reading time = words ÷ WPM × 60 seconds.

Who uses a reading time calculator?

  • Bloggers and content marketers estimate “X min read” badges (use 238 WPM — it's what Medium uses).
  • Students and researchers plan how long an assigned reading will take.
  • Speech writers and public speakers convert a target talk length into a target word count (use 130–150 WPM for comfortable delivery with pauses).
  • Podcasters and voice actors estimate recording time.
  • Teachers set realistic homework reading loads.

Writers who care about reading polish may also want a second opinion on their draft — Grammarly and ProWritingAid are the two most widely used.

Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is calculated by dividing the word count by an average reading speed in words per minute (WPM), then converting to minutes and seconds. The formula is time_in_seconds = word_count ÷ WPM × 60. This calculator defaults to 238 WPM for silent reading, 183 WPM for reading aloud, and 150 WPM for audiobook listening.

What is the average reading speed?

The average adult reads silently at around 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 WPM for fiction (Brysbaert, 2019). Reading aloud is slower, averaging 183 WPM in English. Speed readers can exceed 400 WPM, while beginner readers or people reading in a second language typically read between 100 and 200 WPM.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

At the average silent reading speed of 238 WPM, 1,000 words takes about 4 minutes 12 seconds. Read aloud (183 WPM), the same 1,000 words takes 5 minutes 28 seconds. As an audiobook (150 WPM), it takes about 6 minutes 40 seconds.

How long does it take to read 500 words?

At 238 WPM silent reading, 500 words takes about 2 minutes 6 seconds. Read aloud, 500 words is roughly 2 minutes 44 seconds — useful for estimating short speeches or podcast intros.

What is the difference between silent reading and reading aloud?

Silent reading is significantly faster because your mouth isn't bottlenecking your eyes. A typical adult reads silently at around 238 WPM but reads aloud at only 183 WPM. If you're converting a written piece to spoken audio (a speech, video script, or podcast), multiply the silent reading time by roughly 1.3.

How many words is a 10-minute speech?

A comfortable 10-minute speech, delivered at around 130 words per minute to leave room for pauses and emphasis, is roughly 1,300 words. If you're a naturally fast speaker (150 WPM), aim for about 1,500 words. Professional speakers tend to stay closer to 120–130 WPM.

What WPM should I use for a blog "X min read" badge?

Use 238 WPM — it's the academic average and the value Medium uses. Some sites use 200 WPM to be conservative; others use 270 to appear snappier. Pick one and stay consistent. This calculator defaults to 238.

Does reading speed change with age?

Yes. Children build up to around 180–200 WPM by age 12. Adults peak between ages 25 and 45 at around 238 WPM silent. Reading speed typically declines slightly after age 65 but the drop is small for frequent readers.

How fast do audiobook narrators speak?

Professional audiobook narrators typically speak at 150–160 WPM — slow enough to be easy on the ear during long listening sessions, but fast enough to avoid feeling sluggish. Most audiobook apps let you adjust playback speed to 1.25× or 1.5× if you want to go faster.

Can I embed a "minutes to read" badge on my blog?

Yes. After entering your word count, use the Copy as badge button to copy an "X min read" text snippet you can paste directly into your blog post. For automatic calculation inside your CMS, most platforms (Ghost, WordPress, Medium, Substack) generate reading-time estimates natively — check your theme settings.
